Circumnavigating Manaslu is one of the toughest treks in Nepal, one with sensational mountain views and one of the most dramatic Himalayan passes, the 5213m Larkya La. Much of this trek is in the region known as Nupri, an area of strong Tibetan influence with the trade routes between the regions still active. Newly opened to trekking. This trek was officially opened to tourist in 1991, but mountaineering expeditions have had long access to the area. In 1950 a party led by H.W. Tilman trekked from Thonje to Bimtang and Col. Jimny Robert crossed the Larkya La looking for an interesting mountain to climb. Manaslu (8156m.) was attempted by Japanese Expeditions every year from 1952 until 1956 when the first ascent was made.
